What happens when you turn on the computer?
The BIOS chip tells it to look in a fixed place, usually on the lowest-numbered hard disk (the boot disk) for a special program called a boot loader (under Linux the boot loader is called Grub or LILO). The boot loader is pulled into memory and started. The boot loader's job is to start the real operating system.

How can I start and shutdown my computer automatically on a schedule?
To set it up on OS X:
  1. Open up System Preferences and click Energy Saver.
  2. In the bottom right corner, click the Schedule button.
  3. Check the box next to "Start up or wake" to schedule when your computer turns on and the checkbox beneath it to schedule when you computer goes

Drain the computer of electricity
  1. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery.
  2. Hold down the power button for at least fifteen seconds.
  3. Without replacing the battery, plug the AC adapter back into the laptop.
