WEBSITES USEFULL

The new 100 most useful sites Two years ago most Britons didn't have broadband and Web 2.0 was barely a twinkle in a developer's eye. Things have changed - as our cream of the crop for 2006 shows   In 2004, the internet was a different place: there was, for example, no YouTube, and most Britons online didn't have broadband. That's changed dramatically: now, more than 75% of users have broadband, and the arrival of Web 2.0 has brought sites where the interaction is as fast as if it were on your machine. So we've revisited the "cream of the crop" that we brought you two years ago. Some of the crop is brand new; some has stood the test of time. As before, we have 100 sites in 20 categories. That of course means that your favourite might not be here (even if you suggested it on our blog). Email us with your suggestions for the ones we should have included. Many of the categories here are new since the last crop . Many of

Does Google think its Nexus can compete with iPhones? Technically Incorrect: The launch of the Nexus 5X has seen a strong TV presence and a new commercial focus on the actual product. Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives. Will Google's phones make iPhone users want to switch? CNET Google has been following me around mercilessly of late. Yes, even more than usual. I'm familiar with the notion that, from its mountain view, Google might try to observe everything I do online. However now the Googlies are there during every TV show I watch. Over the last 10 days, every NFL game and every MLB playoff game seems to have been adorned with an ad for the new Nexus 5X. I thought this might have been some sort of closely-targeted aberration. But then I turned to "The Voice." And there the Google Nexus foll

iPhone 6S, 6S Plus India launch: Bookings miss target Pre-bookings of the new iPhones have risen by just 10-15% compared with last year for the previous models, aga... Read More KOLKATA: Apple's aggressive sales strategy in India may have backfired to some extent as bookings for the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus have fallen short of expectations, said some of the company's trade partners. Against a bold target of tripling pre-bookings for the devices, which will be available in India on October 16, these have risen by just 10-15% compared with last year for the previous models, the partners said. They said buyers expect lower prices online once the phone becomes widely available. Thanks to lower online prices, Apple's ambitious sales target for the new generation of devices could still eventually be met. Earlier this year, Apple had allowed its distributors to sell at the lowest price to the e-commerce channel, leading to a surge in sales after having follo

Reuters/Dado Ruvic/Files Facebook Inc wants its users to shop for clothes and other products from their mobile phones without ever leaving its app. In an effort to move further into e-commerce and compete with Amazon Inc’s retail offerings, Facebook announced Monday it is testing several ad features that allow users to shop directly through its app. Few users make purchases on mobile phones because it is slow and cumbersome, but Facebook hopes to win over more ad dollars by smoothing the process. Mobile purchases make up less than 2 percent of all retail sales,

Mars Colonisation Still Far Off, Says Nasa Scientist Amitabh Ghosh Indo-Asian News Service , 10 October 2015 Nasa scientist Amitabh Ghosh said on Friday that though the discovery of liquid water on Mars opens up immense possibilities, colonisation of the red planet is still a distant possibility. "Among the things that need to be considered are the quality of the liquid water there - or for that matter on Pluto and some of the moons of Jupiter or Saturn - and the cost involved to recover it and make it fit for human consumption," Ghosh, an IIT-Kharagpur alumnus who was the only Asian on the Nasa's Mars Pathfinder Mission, said at a meet-the-press programme at the Mumbai Press Club. Russia demands Google fix ‘anticompetitive’ Android Google faces hefty fines in Russia after the country's antimonopoly agency deemed some features of the U.S. search giant's Android mobile operating system (OS) anticompetitive. The FAS's ruling centers on the way Google's services and applications, such as Google Play, are pre-installed and displayed on Android devices. The regulator takes issue with the fact that when a device manufacturer opts to use Android to run their system, they must install the Google Play store – granting users access to hundreds of thousands of Android apps – and prominently display other of the U.S. online giant's services. Manufacturers are also not allowed to install competing apps, FAS says. One month deadlin
